My research interests are in dynamic systems, control and artificial intelligence. My work currently focuses on dynamic systems in which humans participate cognitively. There are numerous examples of such systems in application areas like electric networks, cyber-security and logistics. In the area of electric networks, for example, the purported transformation of energy delivery to a decentralized “smart” model makes traditional human roles in fault diagnosis, load balancing and optimization much more challenging. At the same time, replacing these roles with traditional automation can make the system fragile to perturbation and difficult to diagnose. Several interesting research opportunities arise when trying to optimally combine human acuity with machine efficiency; a goal that has wide-ranging applications with the increasing adoption of complex cyber-physical systems.
